MURRAY, Robert Holland.
Born on 15 December 1939 in Detroit MI. Died on 21 April 2017 in Montréal QC. A respected teacher and mentor, but first and foremost an artist, Robert made art that is lively, original, and challenging, not limited to any media or form, but rather committed to the practice of art itself. It was inspired by the rich improvisation of the black American music, the ‘call-and-response’ of street corner poetry, and both the warmth and risk that is part of everyday life for people of African descent. Robert taught at Concordia University for over 30 years and inspired countless young artists and scholars to question their assumptions and to value their convictions about both art and life.
Robert leaves behind his sons, their partners, and his grandchildren: Joshua Murray and family; Jozef Emil Hadlaw-Murray and Adiam Haile; Aleksander Isiah Hadlaw-Murray, Sophia Issajenko, and their son, Ellis Robert Murray. He will be deeply missed by his friend and former partner, Jan Hadlaw.
Burial will take place on 4 May 2017 at 11:00 am at Cimetière Notre-Dame-des-neiges. Friends wishing to attend are welcome. Please gather at the Pavillion Administratif at 4601 chemin de la Côte-des-neiges at 10:50 am.
