CEMAL YALINPALA
Teacher, Economist, Activist. Cemal died in the company of friends on October 13th, 2017 in Montreal, at 69 years of age. He will be sadly missed by his sisters, Leyla Selduman and Necla Sencan, and his nephews, Volkan and Hakkan Selduman, all in Istanbul, and his friends everywhere. An economist, born in Istanbul, who received his Ph.D from McGill University, he taught for many years at Vanier College, Montreal.
He also held sessional appointments at Colby College, Maine, where he had earlier done his undergraduate work, and at Isik University in Istanbul. In addition to his teaching career, he was active in a number of spheres: in the Vanier College Teachers Association, where he served in a number of executive positions, including that of President; in the Quebec Fédération Autonome du Collégial, of which he was a founding member; and in Turkey where he spearheaded movements to save endangered sea turtles and fight pollution in his beloved Lake Bafa.
Clear-thinking and forceful, unusually effective in action, he could be immensely personable and sociable, and possessed formidable culinary skills, but there was also a deeply private side to him which sought solitude in remote and beautiful places.
Special thanks to the staff of the Father Dowd Residence who took such good care of him over the last three years.
Friends and former colleagues are invited to share their memories of him at a memorial gathering to be held at on Friday, November 24th at 3.00 pm in the Board Room ((Rm. F216) at Vanier College, 821 Ste.-Croix Blvd, Ville Saint-Laurent (fairly easily accessible via Côte- Vertu and du Collége Metro stations).
