When choosing burial, a visitation and/or a ceremony in the presence of the casket might be held. A reception may also take place. Some people opt to forego both visitation and service (direct burial).

If a farewell takes place before the cremation, a visitation and/or a ceremony in the presence of the casket may be held. A reception may also follow the ceremony.

Farewells after cremation
If a farewell takes place after the cremation, a gathering and/or a ceremony in the presence of the urn may be organized. A reception may follow the memorial service.
Cremation only
Some people opt to forego both visitation and service (direct cremation).
