Lila Mina Colpitts
August 31st, 1931 - January 17th, 2016
It is with great sadness that the family of Lila Mina Colpitts, 84, of Montréal announce her passing on Sunday, January 17th, 2016 at the Father Dowd home in Montréal, after living valiantly with Alzheimer’s and the effects of a stroke the last few years.
Born in Colpitts Settlement, New Brunswick on August 31st, 1931, Lila was the daughter of the late Sanford Allen Colpitts and Mabel Gertrude Leeman.
Lila grew up in Colpitts Settlement and attended Colpitts School. She was a graduate of Salisbury High School and Teachers’ College in Fredericton. She received her BA from the University of New Brunswick and her MA in English Literature from the University of Toronto in 1963.
She began teaching in a one-roomed school house on Grand Manan Island. Her teaching career spanned over forty years from it’s beginning in New Brunswick to Montréal’s St. Lambert School, the Montréal School for the Deaf, Outremont High School, and McGill and Concordia Universities, as well as 23 years of teaching English and Humanities at Dawson College.
A lover of literature, Lila helped found a women’s reading group in Montréal, and she enjoyed writing short stories and poetry. Her love of children kept her young at heart and ready to play, and she could be a formidable Scrabble opponent. She was a very gentle and compassionate soul who cared deeply for her friends and family and devoted much of her time to helping them. Her vivacity made her fun to be with and made conversations memorable. Lila was always there for those she loved and was treasured by them.
Lila is survived by her daughter, Vanessa McKiel (Thomas Dietz) of Portland, Oregon; her son, Jonathan McKiel of Montréal; and siblings Irene Horton of Moncton; Joan Colpitts (Dale) of Fredericton; Gordon Colpitts (Joan) of Salisbury; and Marilyn Grewe of London, ON. She will be greatly missed by her three grandchildren Maxim, Iris, and Nea Dietz, and many dear friends.
Friends are invited to share their memories of Lila at a gathering with her family at the Kane Fetterly Funeral Home in Montréal on March 21st, 2016 from 11am to 2pm. Lila will be interred in Colpitts Settlement Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Childhaven International in her memory.
