Dr. Nagib Cassar
1937 – 2020
With great sadness, we announce the sudden passing of Nagib Cassar on January 19, 2020, at the age of 82. He was the loving husband of Samia Haddad and father of Sonia (Andrew Nafekh), Rania (Jorge David Awe), and Michel (Catherine Mason). Adored grandfather of Martin, Amy, Richard, Emma, Olivia and Sam. Big brother of Karim (Mylene) and uncle to Julien (Domeo), Marie and Jeanne. Much loved by his cousins Raymond Haddad (Sonja), Roland Haddad (Maryse) and Denise Bittar and their families. Cherished by his sisters-in-law Salwa (Samir Atallah) and Samira (Antoine Khoriaty), and their children and grandchildren.
He was born in Alexandria, Egypt, graduated from Cairo University in Medicine in 1961 and moved to Lebanon in 1965, where he met the love of his life. Within one month of meeting, they tied the knot and were married for 53 years. Nagy worked as the Medical Director for the Middle East and Africa at Squibb Pharmaceuticals. In 1969, he moved his family to safety in Canada and to pursue his dream of service as a practicing physician. Nagy continued working at Squibb Canada while completing a fellowship in obstetrics and gynaecology at McGill University. He completed internships at Verdun, Lasalle, Queen Mary, Royal Victoria and Lakeshore hospitals. In 1974, he became a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He started his private practice in Westmount in 1973, where he continued caring for his patients until his retirement in June 2018. As an Associate Professor of Medicine, he was a long-standing and respected member of the McGill medical community, performing thousands of deliveries, as well countless ultrasounds and surgeries at the Royal Victoria and Queen Elizabeth hospitals. Bringing babies into the world was his greatest joy and accomplishment. He was always grateful for the support of his wonderful colleagues at McGill and his friends all over the world.
He loved to feed his mind and was an encyclopedia of history, encouraging debate and critical thinking through his questions and cryptic crossword challenges. However, his passion and life’s work was the exceptional care of his family and patients. He was everybody’s doctor and his family meant the world to him. He loved unconditionally and was loved in return by all.
The visitation will be held Friday, Jan. 24, 2020, from 2 to 5 pm and from 7 to 9 pm at Kane & Fetterly Funeral Home, 5301 Decarie Blvd., Montreal, Quebec, H3W 3C4.
