Lewis, Mary Evelyn (nee Cullen)
May 5,1942 – Oct. 16, 2018
It is with profound sadness we announce the death of Mary at the RVH Palliative Care Unit this past Tuesday.
Mary is survived by her husband of 44 years, Colin, and her daughter Janet (Matthew). She was a devoted GrandMary to Lucie, the apple of her eye. She will be dearly missed by her sister Janet (Chris), brother Michael (Carol Ann) and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mary was born in Ottawa and grew up in Montreal where she attended Marianopolis College (BSc) and McGill University (BLS, MLS). She had a successful career as a librarian at Bell Canada, Alcan, and especially Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, where she worked for over 10 years. Mary completed her Masters of Library Science while Janet was in diapers, and later became a dedicated school library volunteer. She turned this into a second career and worked as the librarian at various EMSB schools in the 1990s. In addition to being a voracious reader and an accomplished cook (often reading at the stove thus indulging both passions at once), Mary enjoyed skiing out West, travelling with Colin and the Paris 5, and playing bridge.
Her many friends will remember her keen intellect, quiet wit, and incredible pies. In recent years, she was often happiest on the dock at St-Adolphe, watching Lucie swim and chatting with neighbours. Special thanks to Dr. Maureen Doyle, Dr. Jeffery Hall and Justine Gauthier at the Neuro, the team at the palliative care unit at the RVH, the Benny Farm CLSC team, and caregivers Lourdes Buchhalters, Patricia Lucas, Suzanne and Melissa Hertig. Mary certainly gave the glioblastoma a run for its money, but her race is over now and she can finally rest.
In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Montreal Neurological Institute, the Cedars Cancer Centre Foundation, or the EMSB in memory of Mary Lewis (all donations to the EMSB will go directly to purchasing books for school libraries).
Visitation will take place at Kane & Fetterly from 2-5 and 7-9pm on Sunday, October 21st. The funeral will be held at Ascension of our Lord Church in Westmount at 10 am on Monday, October 22nd.
