GOLDSMITH, William John, MDCM
1946-2018
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Bill on December 7, 2018 at the age of 72.
Bill passed surrounded by his devoted family.
Cherished husband of 47 years to Dr. Trudis Goldsmith-Reber. Adored father and loyal friend to his sons, John-Henry (Kelly Reynolds), and Michael-Rock (Leah Giannakis). “Opi” will forever be remembered with fierce love by his three precious grandchildren Olivia-Michelle Stella, Madison Marie and Griffin Roberts. He will be sadly missed by his sister Megan Dinsmore (Chuck), his nephew Tad Cody (Leslie) and niece Elizabeth McQuillan (John). Predeceased by his parents (Dr. Herbert and Kerry Goldsmith).
Bill was born and raised in Bronx NY, attended the Bronx High School of Science and moved to Montreal to study at McGill University where he trained and became a physician. Over the last four decades, “Dr. G” touched the lives of thousands of patients, delivering a countless numbers of babies into the world. He also devoted an important part of his career to women and mothers in the northernmost First Nations extremities of Quebec.
Bill was a kind and generous man who served his profession and community with devotion and kindness. As an Attending Physician (OB-GYN) at the Royal Victoria Hospital, he was known to his colleagues, residents, nurses, and patients as a compassionate and caring physician. Our hearts are broken; he was our rock.
Heartfelt thanks to the caring staff on the intensive care unit at the Royal Victoria Hospital, MUHC.
Family will receive condolences at the Kane Fetterly Funeral Home, 5301 Decarie Blvd. (corner Isabella) on Monday, December 10 from 2 to 5 pm and 7 to 9 pm. A Funeral Mass will held at St. Malachy's Church, 5330 Clanranald on Tuesday, December 11 at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, donations to "The Montreal Children's Hospital Foundation"(fondationduchildren.com) or to the Alice Benjamin Fund (https://www.mcgill.ca/medicine/alumni/dr-alice-benjamin-fund) would be appreciated.
