Vera Mikhailovna Gourevitch Ivanova passed away peacefully on October 4th 2019 at the age of 85. She leaves behind her daughter Elena Gourevitch Braker (Sergei Chteinberg), her granddaughter Maria Masha Braker (Mark Goldsmith), her adored great-grandson Max, her younger sister Galina Ivanova and her children Igor and Mikhail, as well as numerous friends and family on both sides of the Atlantic. Vera was the loving wife of Leonid Lenya Gourevitch for more than fifty years and tirelessly cared for him for two decades after he became ill until his death in 2011.

Born on September 19, 1934 in Yegorievsk, Moscow region, Vera’s childhood was marked by war and hardship, but also by the protective love of her mother Dunya and closeness with her brother Jenya. Despite coming from modest means, Vera persevered in her studies and became a textile engineer. For most of her working life, Vera was the head of the research laboratory at a textile factory in the USSR, no easy feat for a young woman from the country-side with a Jewish last name.

Her love story with Lenya lasted until the very end and was a source of great comfort for her, as well as an inspiration to those around her. She was a devoted mother and a fun, resourceful and doting grandmother, and later great-grandmother. A skilled host, she loved to bring people together to celebrate and share a bite to eat. Having started to learn French in Canada, she gave it her all and came to enjoy French literature in her late seventies. Most of all, she shined when she was surrounded by family and friends. She will be dearly missed and warmly remembered by all those who knew her.

A funeral will be held at Kane & Fetterly Funeral Home 5301 Decarie Blvd Montreal, Quebec October 10, 2019, reception 10:00 - 11:00, ceremony 11:00-12:00.
