Doreen Agatha Hendy-Bunbury
Doreen Agatha Hendy, affectionately known as Dora, was born in Plaisance, Guyana, South America to Mannie Hendy and Mary Collimore. She was the 3rd of 8 children.
She died at Victory Memorial Hospital in Montreal, under the watchful eyes of her surviving children and grandchildren.
Predeceased by husband of 40+years, Harry Egbert Bunbury, sons (Leon, Morrell and Egbert (surviving wife - Denise) and daughter, Evetta Thomas.
Survived by her children, Alfred (wife – Deanna), Yvonne (husband – Carl), Roy (wife – Sandra), Noel aka Eze, Grace, Samuel (wife – Peggy), Orton aka Tony, Marcelle (husband – Robert) and Marlon aka Alex, and 57 grandchildren and 60 greatgrandchildren.
Doreen adored her parents and was a self-proclaimed ‘daddy’s girl,’ siding with her father that she was born June 5th, not June 6th, as held by her mother and stated on her birth certificate.
As a result, her family wisely acknowledged both days.
Doreen grew up a gentle unassuming young lady, who prided herself on finding the Lord at the tender age of 17.
As her faith grew, so too did her appetite for a life of demonstrating God’s love and kindness to others.
A pied piper of sorts, Doreen attracted endless visitors, turned house guests.
She loved her siblings and had a deep fondness for her nieces and nephews, who in turn, admired their auntie, Doreen.
Dora was a great cook and baker – the latter skill undoubtedly attributed to her father, and renowned Baker, Mannie Hendy.
Doreen, and her late husband, Harry Bunbury, immigrated to Montreal, Canada in October,1976 with 9 of their 13 children: the 4 older siblings had already relocated to Canada and the USA and are credited with the reunification of the family.
With continued hard work and emphasis on promoting the value of good education and / or pursuing one’s passion, Doreen’s steadfast faith and tenacity helped her family gracefully and successfully embrace the challenges, unique to life in north America.
She continued her crusade of love, wholeheartedly caring for others and positively impacting all with whom she interacted.
She loved her friends, and never stopped praying for them.
Boldly proclaiming Jesus as Lord of her life, Dora unashamedly shared her faith.
She could be heard encouraging others to, “read the Bible, believe it, and live it!”
Doreen knew the Bible well, having read it numerous times.
She taught Sunday School for many years and found great joy in shepherding others to Christ.
Among other strategies, she quietly discipled by leaving leaflets wherever she ventured.
For Doreen, praying without praying for all the families of the world, was a limited understanding of the scope of God’s unfailing love.
She appreciated all of her Heavenly Father’s creations.
Although Doreen loved her church family, friends, relatives, husband, Children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.
Above all, she Loved and revered God to her death bed.
At age 88, our beloved Dora was captured in a video saying, “God you made the wind and I don’t want the wind to pass between us, I don’t want the time to come when you say, I know you not.”
Her ongoing and outgoing prayer was that God would save the souls of her children and their families.
She spent the best part of the last 10 years echoing that she was ready to be with the Lord.
So grateful are her friends and family that God wanted her to remain and re-pre-sent Him, and that, she did.
Then a widow of approximately 20 years, the video further captures Dora recalling hearing singing while in bed, Dora proceeds to say, “I thank God for such a spiritual blessing, telling me that you live alone in the flesh but not in the spirit and I’m not taking you right now because you live a life of example and I know you’re going to keep it up ‘til I’m ready for you.”
Dora’s life will be celebrated on Friday, May 29, 2020 at 12:30 PM at Kane and Fetterly Funeral Home, burial at 3 PM.
She will be laid to rest at Le Repos Saint Francois d’Assise, at 6893 Sherbrooke E, Montreal, where she will join her late husband, Harry Bunbury as planned.
