Samir (Sam) Atallah
Dec 1, 1937 - April 14, 2020
With great sadness, we announce the passing of Sam Atallah at his home, under the care of and surrounded by his loving family.
He was a dedicated husband to Salwa (Sally) (née Haddad), and unconditionally loving and supportive father to Carole (Kevin Shanahan) and Ralph (Allison Weiner). Much beloved Jeddo (grandfather) to Matthew, Kristina, Clara and Ryan. Younger brother to Paula and Tony (deceased). Close brother-in-law of Samia & Nagib Cassar (deceased) and Mia & Tony Khoriaty and cherished uncle to Sonia, Rania, Michel, Aline, Nathalie and Pamela alongside their lovely families.
Sam and Sally were soon to celebrate their 55th wedding anniversary this coming June. They were an inseparable couple. You would rarely see Sam without Sally or Sally without Sam. Both full of love and admiration for each other and always operating as one unit. Everyone who encountered them could attest that they honoured all their marriage vows with beauty and grace.
Born in Lebanon, Sam lost his father at the age of 12, and took it upon himself to support his mother, sister and brother a few years later. When his mom passed away, he took his sister under his wing and in his home. By 1978, with the Lebanese Civil War showing no sign of ending, he made the difficult however potentially life-saving choice to immigrate with his young family and sister to Montreal, Canada leaving behind his home and successful accounting career, and re-building his life from the ground up at the age of 40. Sam's health and safety were compromised again in the early 2000's. Sam and Sally felt they received another miracle when after three years on dialysis, Sam was fortunate and extremely grateful to receive a kidney from an unknown donor in 2004. After 14 years of admirable lifestyle, medical discipline and welcoming two more grandchildren, Sam unfortunately was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer for the last two years of his life. The final part of his physical journey on this earth, he was courageous, grateful, dignified and full of expressing his tremendous love for his family.
Sam was incredibly disciplined, selfless, generous, humorous, playful, resilient, honest, responsible, authentic, a voice of reason and a man of faith. He was always grateful for the good things life gave him even during his life's most trying times.
Sammy Baby, Daddy, Baba, Jeddeh, Jeddo... you will be dearly missed.
