Venetta Gowans

With deep sadness and enduring love, the family of Sylvia Venetta Gowans announces her peaceful passing on July 6, 2025. A woman of formidable strength, intellect, and compassion, Venetta's life was marked by purpose, passion, and an unshakable belief in justice, family, and truth.

Born in 1942 in St. Kitts, Venetta immigrated to Canada in 1965, bringing with her an unyielding spirit and a determination to build a better life. She embodied the courage of countless immigrants—resilient, hopeful, and fiercely committed to paving the way for future generations.

Venetta was known for her outspoken nature and deep knowledge, particularly when it came to politics, a subject she followed with conviction and clarity. Conversations with her were lively, insightful, and unforgettable—always grounded in her values and her keen sense of history.

She also found joy and camaraderie in her beloved Montreal Canadiens, cheering and critiquing with the same fervor and honesty she brought to every aspect of her life.

Above all, Venetta was a devoted mother and grandmother. She leaves behind her cherished son Trexis, daughter-in-law Marina, and grandson Jacob, who were the center of her world. She also leaves behind her beloved friend Faye, whose steadfast friendship brought laughter, support, and sisterhood through the years.

Her love was unconditional and proud, and her presence in the lives of those she loved was a source of strength and inspiration.

Sylvia Venetta Gowans was a woman who lived boldly, loved deeply, and spoke truthfully. Her absence leaves a profound void, but her legacy lives on in the family she adored, the values she upheld, and the countless lives she touched.

She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

May she rest in eternal peace.

The burial will take place on Monday, July 21st at 1:00 PM at Rideau Cemetery, located at 4275 Boulevard des Sources, Dollard-des-Ormeaux, QC H9B 2A6
