Vonica Barbara Morrison, age 78, passed away peacefully with her daughter by her side on October 17, 2019 at Montreal Mount Sinai Hospital from complications due to lung cancer.
Vonica, affectionately known by her family as Shirley, was born on September 17, 1941 in Linstead, St. Catherine, Jamaica W.I to the late Gilbert and Mildred Morrison.
After completing mandatory schooling, Vonica worked as a dressmaker and she co-owned and operated a fried fish shop. She immigrated to Canada in June 1974 in search of better employment opportunities to provide for her family. In Montreal Quebec, where she resided until her death, she obtained various employments in the domestic, restaurant and manufacturing (plastic moulding) industries. While working full time, she took typing and French classes at night.
She applied to have her three children in Jamaica reunited with her in Canada. In 1980, her two sons Delroy and Glendon arrived and in 1982 Winsome (a grandniece whom she adopted as her daughter) arrived.
Vonica is survived by her three children: Delroy of Queens, NY, USA, Glendon of Montreal, Quebec, and Winsome of Saint Hubert, Quebec. She is also survived by twelve grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The life Vonica lived was exemplified by two Bible verses that she endeavored to be guided by; Matthew 7:12 which states “All things, therefore, that you want men to do to you, you also must do to them. This, in fact, is what the Law and the Prophets mean”, and Ephesians 4:32 which states “But become kind to one another, tenderly compassionate, freely forgiving one another just as God also by Christ freely forgave you”.
She was a dedicated daughter to her beloved mother Mildred whom she lovingly cared for, being at her side until her last breath. She was an equally dedicated mother to her three children. She tirelessly worked hard to set them off on a good footing in life. She was proud of her grandchildren whom she dearly loved. She was loyal to those whom she forged close friendships, and they in turn loyally stuck by her side, supporting and comforting her to the end.
Vonica had a talent and passion for cooking and baking. Never satisfied to stick to a recipe, her creative nature resulted in mouth-watering dishes and incredibly tasting cakes. Her Jamaican black cake and potato pudding were always delicious. Her favorite pastimes were crocheting, needlepoint and knitting. Vonica had a vivacious personality and always made people around her laugh. She was dearly loved by friends and family and will be sorely missed. Isaiah 43:13 states of the true God Jehovah, “When I act, who can prevent it?”. By means of the resurrection, Jehovah’s actions can and will exceed all of our expectations.
Family and friends are invited to the visitation, memorial talk, and funeral reception on Saturday November 2, 2019 from 11:00AM to 4:00PM at the Kane & Fetterly Funeral Home, 5301 boul. Decarie.
