Obituary - John Da Silva
On Monday, October 28th, 2019, John Da Silva, founder of Ecogold Canada, loving husband and father of two daughters, passed away at the age of 80.
John was born as Joao Luis Gonçalves da Silva on November 29th, 1938 in Lisbon, Portugal to Antonia Gonçalves and Ruy Guedes da Silva. Later, he moved to Barcelona, Spain, where he received his Textile Engineering degree and met Carmina Pedros Soler, who he married in 1963 and raised two daughters, Anabel and Patricia.
On 1980, John moved to Canada with his family and soon after, he became the founder and chief product designer of Ecogold Canada. As a textile engineer trained in Europe, he lived, dreamt and worked in high-tech fabrics since the early 1960s. He could tell you how Gore-Tex was invented or what seat belts are made of. On his day off, he used to go to the ECOGOLD lab to test new materials. He is even known for hitting them with an axe or a hammer to check their resistance to impact.
He was known for his patience, his sense of humour, his infectious smile, and his kind and generous spirit.
John is survived by his wife Carmina, his two daughters Anabel and Patricia, his sister Aida, his son-in-law Lou and his grand-sons Victor and Adrian.
