What is rattan?
Rattan is a naturally renewable palm that grows in the tropical regions of Africa, Asia and Australasia, and is used for furniture, handicrafts, and building material among others.
The skin of rattan strands is peeled off and used for weaving, while the “core” of the rattan can be used for various purposes in furniture making (wicker).
What is sea grass?
Sea grass is a term used to describe flowering plants that reproduce by pollination and that have evolved to live in seawater. There are 57 species of seagrass that grow in mostly tropical but also temperate regions. The one used here is in the Sedge family and grows in the Asia Pacific region. The perennial grasses are harvested from paddy fields that are flooded with seawater during the growing cycle. When the grass is mature, the fields are drained and the plants are cut and bundled. The grass is twisted (or plied) entirely by hand and sent to be woven into yarn or rope.
