HANNA Helen (nee Budd) B.A. M.A. D.D.,
died peacefully in her sleep at the age of 91, at the West Island Manor in Pierrefonds, late Monday, August 13, 2018.
She was pre-deceased by her husband of 65 years, Dr. Blake T. Hanna, and her youngest son, Matthew Thompson Hanna. She was also pre-deceased by her three half-brothers, Grenville Budd, Cecil Budd and Marvin Budd, and her half-sister, Marion Becker (née Budd).
Helen was born March 14, 1927, in Derby, Connecticut, the only child of Rev. Alfred W. Budd and Leta Evadel Mosher. She graduated cum laude from Syracuse University in 1947 with a B.A. in English and a major in Journalism. She earned a Master's degree in English Literature from McGill University in 1975. McGill University’s United Theological College conferred upon her an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree in 2004. Helen was an English and Journalism instructor at Sir George Williams University and Dawson College in Montreal.
She was an executive member of the Montreal United Church Presbytery, and served as Chairperson in 1980 and 1981. She chaired and served on multiple community, social and educational committees, including the Montreal City Mission, The United Theological College, The Committee to Aid Refugees, and the Raging Grannies. She was President of the Montreal and Ottawa Conference of the United Church of Canada in the 1980s. She and Carol Kirkpatrick later became accredited lay preachers for the United Church of Canada.
Helen is survived by three of her sons, David Blake Hanna, Jonathan Budd Hanna, Arnold Peter Hanna. Helen was also the proud grandmother of Nicholas Joseph Hanna, Jessica Sarah Hope Poulin (née Hanna), and Valerie Ryton Hanna. Helen was lucky to live long enough to enjoy the birth of three of her great-grandchildren, Leo Blake Hanna, Erin Chiara Poulin, and Jordan Alessia Poulin.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 8, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. at Riverside United Church, 200 chemin de la Grande-Côte in Rosemère.
